Plymouth Ice Festival, 2012

This past week real winter arrived in Michigan.

What started out as pretty friggin' cold

turned into colder

and colder

and then remarkable!

This is officially the coldest I've ever been! It was pretty exciting.

With the cold came more beautiful, glittery snow.

As well as a beautiful sunrise,

and a freezing Huron River! (These photos were taken on Thursday, but when I drove over the river today it was completely frozen with a layer of snow on top. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera.)

They're really good about plowing and salting the roads in Ann Arbor. But because there are so many, they sometimes don't bother with the more minor roads, like this one leading to the river.

Driving on snow is an experience and I'm pleased to say that we've only had minor slippage and no damage.

While it's been so cold out, we've been cuddling a lot

and knitting with friends.

And, coinciding perfectly with the freezing weather, the annual Plymouth Ice Festival was held this weekend, in, yup, Plymouth!

My friend, Julia invited me to go with her and we really had a nice time – thanks, Julia!

Icy seat.

It seems that many of the local businesses sponsored the different sculptures, so there were many different designs, often displaying something relevant to the business.

Wine, glass, and grapes.

Crane.

Yellow Jacket.

Corn cob and others.

Penguin.

Dog for adoption shelter.

Brush your teeth Teddy.

Sold! (House for relators.)

Fish.

Imaginary creature.

Another fish.

More fish.

Snowflake.

Shoe on a pedestal.

Eiffel Tower.

Most of the sculptures were smaller, but some of them were really big!

Container.

Rideable dinosaur.

Eskimos.

Fox news desk.

Bear chair with a baby bear.

Uncle Sam fighting a bear?
Horse and cart.

And some were very patriotic!

Lady Liberty #1.

Lady Liberty #2.

There were also demonstrations of how the sculptures were made with many of the artists hard at work throughout the festival.

Work stations.

Ice for sculpting.

Taking a chain saw to it.

An intricate design.

Once we had seen the sculptures, we spent some time walking around downtown Plymouth and enjoying the little shops. Away from the family area we found this:

Ice bar!

Vodka holder.

Beer cooler.

Tonight the temperatures are supposed to warm up with a forecast of rain and thunderstorms! But hopefully winter will be back again in a few days.
