Can You Do The Can Can?

After picking so many apples, Anna, Veronika, and I have been trying to come up with different things to do with them. We've all made apple cakes and pies, Anna made some delicious apple jam, and Veronika made yummy compote. But there were still more, so on Monday Veronika and I made big batches of applesauce and then canned them. Canning is something I've been interested in for a long time and I enjoyed my first experience. I'll definitely do some more.

We first prepared the jars by removing the lids and rinsing them out.

The jars were then sterilized in a hot water bath in the humongous canning pot.

Meanwhile, we started the applesauce by peeling and slicing the apples.

We added water and then boiled the apples until they were soft.

We took a potato masher to them and added sugar and spice.

We returned the applesauce to the stove to cook down and made sure to stir frequently.

Once the applesauce was done, we carefully removed the jars from their bath and filled them.

We put the lids on, but only finger-tight because you want the air to escape when you return the jars to the water bath.

Then put them all back into the hot water to seal.

We took a break while the jars were processing and gave some attention where it was needed.

Aw!
And then we were done! It was neat to hear all the little pops when the jars sealed as I removed them from the water.

This was a few hours' work, but it was definitely worth it!
